LET’S MAKE : ZINES

Artist unknown

This evening we’ll have some fun exploring Zine making.

What is a zine? Pronounced “zeen” is a small self- self-published booklet or magazine, typically created independently using a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) ethos. Zines gained popularity in the 1930s among science fiction fans. By the 1970s and 80s, they became a cornerstone of the punk rock and feminist DIY movements. Historically, zines were used as an empowering tool to challenge the status quo, spread alternative perspectives, and amplify marginalized voices outside of mainstream media.

Some ideas to get you started :

  • a journal

  • dedicated to a special interest or subject

  • explore an idea or issue that’s important to you

  • create a narrative running through it

  • abstract drawing

  • a book of things that bring you joy

  • a diary of things you ate for breakfast

  • a manifesto

You could add collage, write, cut and stick, illustrate, poetry - there are no rules or right/wrong way to make a zine! Use paper folding to make a concertina book to go inside? Add layers of tracing paper or create pockets etc. Any other ideas, let your imagination flow!
