Hello! I’m Alexa.

What you will find in me –  a happy, creative soul making thoughtful images.  I’m a photographer based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The thought of your images being looked at and held over and over as your life goes on is so special. Looking back, remembering and recalling the feelings you felt on the day it was taken? Flippin’ amazing. My approach is friendly, natural and unassuming – the love, the light and the important moments.

My favourite scene in Mad Men is when Don Draper pitches to advertise the Kodak slide carousel. I guess this sums it all up for me. He talks about the power of nostalgia, how photographs can...

...let us travel the way a child travels, around and around and back home again to a place where we know we are loved.
— Don Draper, Mad Men.

A bit more about me?  I’m story-telling, tea-loving lady and capture images with my camera and my heart.  I adore London, and am always dreaming of our next Cornwall adventure. I’m happiest with a cuppa in hand and a book in my bag.

Black coffee, tea in the right mug, dinner and a glass of wine with friends in Kings Cross make my world go round. Things that make my world go round - good music, beautiful light, tea in the right cup, independent cinema, the beach in winter, pine forests, mid-century style and exploring with my camera.

Running after small children? I’m good at that – my boy is Sebastian (5) and my girl is Jessamine (2). I am enthralled watching them grow and explore the world – I guess they will be my lifelong photographic inspiration.  I have been a photographer for 7 years now, but I began my career as an Early Years teacher in central London, so I have spent a lot of time over the years in the company of young ones. I am absolutely fascinated with how they develop, interact with the world and grow in their own unique way. I hope to capture their personality, spirit and connection with you in the photographs I take.

I love an in-the-car singalong, sneaking off to independent cinemas on my own in the afternoon (doesn’t happen often enough these days!), day trips with friends, wandering with my camera and when I’m at home in the evening, I love cooking up a tasty dinner then watching Taskmaster on telly with my husband.

I guess I could describe myself as in introverted extrovert - I love spending time with people, but also love my own time and space and I’m a big old bookworm: my bookshelf is a mixture of novels set in the past, many a Margaret Atwood, Brene Brown, beautifully illustrated children’s books both old and new, Virginia Woolf, biographies of the St Ives artists and old notebooks that I can’t bear to part with.

Life is fleeting and I want to hold on. Writing gratitudes really makes a positive impact on my life and walking clears my mind and resets my soul. I love to walk more than anything and even when I’m not with my camera…colours, shapes and textures lead my eye as I stroll, feelings and atmosphere lead my heart – collecting small treasures, stories and inspiration. I adore slices of light, observing how it illuminates and emphasises in different ways with shadows and highlights as the year moves on and the sun changes position in the sky. Audiobooks and podcasts are my happy place whilst walking and am always on the look out for new recommendations of things to listen to so if you have any or want to swap favourite listens let me know!

I’ve always been intrigued by how the power of our senses is connected to our emotions and memory - how a smell, a music track, finding an object in a box from years before, can take us on a journey of nostalgia. I believe in playing music albums over and over from start to finish until it feels like they’ve become a part of me.

Extra fun fact about my name : Loy is my middle name. I share it with my Grandma - she was given it as her middle name in 1932, as a nod to the famous film actress of the time Myrna Loy - I hated this name when I was a child in the 1980’s, but I adore the link now. (But no, don’t make the Amazon Alexa joke, unless you want an eye roll - I can’t control your lights or play music!)

I am so interested in people and love making new connections - I find it amazing how we are all so different yet share so many common things. I am so looking forward to getting to know you too!
